SBR Mahjong Tournament for Beginners "Mahjong Festival 2024-11"

The SBR Mahjong Tournament for Beginners "Mahjong Festival 2024-11" was held November 23, 2024 in Moscow at the Meridian Cultural Center.

28 players from Moscow took part in the tournament. The vast majority of participants, 17 players, played their first tournament!

What is a "Mahjong Festival"?

The idea goes back to the very first event of this kind, held back in June 2022, when a tournament was held immediately after the master class! At the suggestion of the organizer, the master class visitors magically turned into players, for many of them it was an unforgettable experience. The event was called "Mahjong Festival" — a symbiosis of educational and competitive components.

In order to hold a tournament specifically for beginners, it was decided to limit participation to "experienced" players and provide an opportunity to play for players with minimal or no experience at all (the first tournament). The result exceeded the wildest expectations — 28 participants of the "mahjong festival" in November are a clear proof of this. It was decided to explore the possibility and add more dates to the calendar for holding such tournaments.

Winners and runners-up:

  • 1st place overall — Maxim Pevchev, 15 years old
  • 2nd place overall — Lidiya Istomina, 14 years old
  • 3rd place overall and 1st place among debutants — Olga Nabatova
  • 2nd place among debutants — Margarita Makarcheva
  • 3rd place among debutants — Irina Lesneva
  • best "clan" — the Pevchev family

Organizer

Vitaly Novikov held his 74th tournament in mahjong, including the 32nd SBR Mahjong Tournament.

The Russian Mahjong Federation expresses gratitude to the administration of the family club of intellectual games "Panda in the Chest" and personally to Maria Istomina, Svetlana Ermanson, Alexander Istomin, as well as the RMF board representative Vitaly Novikov for organizing and holding the championship.

The first SBR mahjong tournament in “Panda in the Chest” club

The FIRST SBR mahjong tournament of the family club “Panda in the Chest” was held on May 5, 2024 in Moscow in the creative workshops “Chest”. 16 players from Moscow took part in the tournament.

The tournament in the “Panda in the Chest” club continues the series of tournaments of the “Junior+” format (i.e. tournaments with the participation of juniors — children 8-15 years old), a trend that began back in October 2022 at the Meridian Culture Center. As a rule, parents also participate in such tournaments along with juniors, forming “clans”, that is players from the same family. However, in the club tournament “Panda in the Chest” a kind of record was set, the participation of clans of three people, and there were THREE such clans!

During the uncompromising struggle, the winners and prize-winners were determined:

  • 1st place in the overall standings – Nikolay Ermanson
  • 2nd place in the overall standings – Karina Abdullaeva
  • 3rd place in the overall standings and 1st place among juniors – Lidiya Istomina, 13 years old
  • 2nd place among juniors – Anastasia Pevcheva, 13 years old
  • 3rd place among juniors – German Ermanson, 9 years old

Alexander Istomin held his the FIRST mahjong tournament. The Russian Mahjong Federation expresses gratitude to the creative workshops "Chest" (director – Maria Istomina) for providing a new platform for holding SBR mahjong tournaments.
